I am writing this from my bed, in my small London apartment.
Through the sliding door on my left is a distant view of Canary Wharf. It’s a cloudy Saturday afternoon, which has brought about some drizzle and chill. I am in my pyjama’s, with a hot cup of tea on my bedside.
I am writing my first ever newsletter.
This newsletter is my online diary. My space to navigate “the shift” and to bring you along with me.
What is “the shift” you ask? let me explain.
6 years ago, I started my first corporate job as an audit trainee, at a big 4 firm in South Africa. I was on track to qualifying as a Chartered Accountant and hopes were high. 3 years and 2 board exams later, I finally did it! I had achieved my ultimate dream of becoming a Chartered Accountant.
It was at this point, when it first occurred to me. The question we all dread. The question no one seems to warn us about. The inevitable question that I didn’t have an answer to.
“so, what’s next?”
I have spent the better part of my post qualified years, searching for answers to this question and for some time I thought I had it.
“A job in industry”
“Maybe something in finance”
“If I can make manager then I’ll figure it out”
“Consulting doesn’t sound too bad”
These were all great options, but none really stood out for me. Don’t get me wrong, they are all logical options and I could follow just about any of them with a more than average chance of success.
But are they really what I want to do? or are they options that fit my Chartered Accountancy qualification?
What about options that fit me?
That is “the shift”
A change in mindset from looking for a pre-determined, default career path that fits your qualification to designing a life that you want and building a career around it.
This is why I am launching this space. To navigate “the shift” and bring you along in the journey. This space is for anyone sitting with that question. Looking for answers too.
I will be sharing reflections of my journey here, the highs, the lows, the “aha” moments and the in-betweens.
You will also find tools and prompts to help you on your own shift. Maybe even some fun activities along the way.
This is a quieter, more personal approach to designing the life we want and gaining career clarity, away from the pressure of the algorithms, aesthetics, likes, and views.
A space where you and I can just talk.
Twice a month on a Sunday afternoon.
For now, I hope you click subscribe and join in on the journey.
Because you deserve to live a life you truly enjoy.
Thanks for being here. I appreciate your time.
Ntwanie.
P.s my tea went cold :)
